What Is Answer Engine Optimization?
Shaping content so that AI answer engines cite your business, as distinct from traditional SEO, which aims to rank a page in a list of links.
Also called AEO, answer engine optimization, generative engine optimization, GEO
Answer engine optimization — AEO, sometimes generative engine optimization or GEO — is the practice of writing so that an AI system quotes and credits you when somebody asks it a question. It is the same job as SEO pointed at a different surface, and for a contractor the honest version of it is short.
Why it is mostly the old advice
The systems doing the answering are trained and grounded on ordinary crawled pages. Google’s guidance for site owners still describes what makes a page worth surfacing, and none of it has been repealed: be genuinely useful, be specific, be readable, be who you say you are.
What is different is the shape of the writing. An answer engine is looking for a self-contained passage that answers a question. A page that opens with three paragraphs of preamble before the useful sentence is a page that is harder to quote than one that leads with it.
What a contractor has that a model does not
Specificity about a place and a trade. What a dormer costs to permit in a particular town, what an inspector there actually asks for, what a house of a given era hides behind the plaster, what the license number on an advertisement is supposed to look like. None of that can be generated convincingly, and all of it is quotable.
That is also why generic AI-written content performs badly at this: it is assembled from the same public material the answering system already has.
The local half
For “near me” questions, the answer is assembled substantially from business listings rather than from articles. That makes your Google Business Profile — categories, hours, services, photographs, questions and answers, reviews — the highest-leverage thing you own, and Ask Maps has made that more true rather than less. Google’s own help for business profiles is the reference for what may go on one.
The bottom line
Write one page per real question, answer it in the first sentence, put your own specifics in it, and keep your profile complete. That is the whole discipline, and it was good advice before anybody called it AEO.
