What Is Missed-Call Text-Back?
An automatic text message sent to anybody whose call you did not answer, usually within seconds, asking what they need.
Also called missed call text back, auto text back
Missed-call text-back is the simplest useful automation in the trades. Somebody calls, nobody answers, and within a few seconds they get a text: this is So-and-so Plumbing, sorry we missed you, what do you need? A meaningful share of people reply, and a call that was lost becomes a conversation.
Why it works
A homeowner with a problem calls three companies in a row. The order they call in is not the order they hire in — the one that responds first is. A text that arrives while they are still dialling the second number puts you back at the front of that queue without anybody in your office doing anything.
It also fits how people now behave. A large share of customers would rather text than talk, and a text thread gives you an address, a photograph of the problem and a time window without a phone call at all.
Getting it right
Three things separate a version that works from one that annoys people. Speed: the message should go within seconds, not minutes. Attribution: the first words should be your company name, because an unattributed text from a strange number looks like fraud. And staffing: somebody has to answer the replies, on a real number, during hours you actually work.
Most field service management software and every reputation platform now offers this, and so do the standalone messaging tools. It is also the natural companion to an AI receptionist: the phone is answered when it can be, and texted when it cannot.
The rules
Business texting is not the wild west. Consent, honouring opt-outs and carrier registration for application-to-person messaging all apply, and the Federal Communications Commission is the authority on the rules behind them. Replying to somebody who just called you is the least risky category of business text there is, but the mechanics — a working STOP, a registered sender — still matter. Your provider should handle it and should be able to say how, and Google’s own guidance for business profiles is worth reading alongside it if you are also texting from the number on your listing.
The bottom line
If you do one thing on this page, do this one. It takes an afternoon to set up, it costs less than a single shared lead, and it recovers calls that are already paid for. Just make sure the reply lands somewhere a person is looking.
