Augusta is the kind of market this works best in. It is big enough that homeowners search rather than only ask a neighbor, and small enough that the number of contractors publishing anything at all is close to zero. In a metro this size a company posting every week is not competing for attention; it is the only one there.

Two states, one market

The Savannah River is a licensing boundary and nothing else. Homeowners in North Augusta and Aiken shop the same contractors as homeowners in Evans, and plenty of companies here work both sides. That is worth being deliberate about: Georgia licenses residential and general contractors through boards administered by the Secretary of State, while South Carolina licenses through the Residential Builders Commission, which regulates residential builders above five thousand dollars of work and specialty contractors above five hundred. Two registrations, two numbers, and both belong on what you publish.

The April problem

There is one week a year when a large amount of property in this area is rented, photographed, inspected and made presentable at once, and the run-up to it compresses demand for painting, landscaping, pressure washing, roofing repair and everything else that shows. A contractor whose profile has been current since January is the one that gets called in February. One who starts posting in March is competing on availability with everybody else.

What the housing looks like

The older stock closer to downtown and in Summerville buys repair, restoration and careful work; the newer subdivisions in Columbia County buy upgrades, outdoor living and replacement. Those are different arguments and different photographs, which is why the trade pages are written separately.
