What Are Direction Requests?
A count, reported by Google, of how many people asked for directions to a business from its profile.
Also called direction request, directions
Direction requests are one of the numbers Google reports on a Business Profile: how many people tapped for directions in a given period. Along with profile views and call clicks, it is one of the few marketing numbers a contractor can see without instrumenting anything.
Why it is worth watching
It is behavior, not impressions. Somebody asking for directions has decided. For a business with a yard or a showroom it is close to a lead; for a service trade that goes to the customer it is a weaker signal, and call clicks matter more.
What makes it useful is that it is a baseline you can take before you change anything, and read again ninety days later.
The honest part
These numbers move slowly, and they move for reasons other than what you did: the season, a competitor’s ad budget, a change to how Google presents results. Anyone who tells you a single month proves their work is selling you something.
Take the baseline, keep posting, and read the trend at sixty and ninety days. That is what PostIQ reports, and it is the honest version of the comparison against paid leads.
Where to find the number
It is in the performance view of your own Business Profile, which is also where Google documents what each metric counts. Read it yourself rather than through a vendor’s dashboard.
The bottom line
Direction requests are worth watching because they are yours and they are hard to fake. Take a baseline before anyone starts work on your marketing, and compare quarters rather than weeks.
